anaphylaxisAnaphylaxis is as serious as it gets with allergies. We answer some of the questions often asked about this potentially fatal condition.

What is it?

Anaphylaxis (Pronounced an-a-fi-LAK-sis) is a serious allergic response that often involves swelling, hives, lowered blood pressure and in severe cases, shock.

If anaphylactic shock isn’t treated immediately, it can be fatal. Symptoms usually start within 5 to 30 minutes of coming into contact with the concerned allergen/s. The most common and noticeable effect of anaphylaxis is a swollen throat and shortness of breath, leading to trouble swallowing and wheezing. These are often accompanied by a red rash and hives.

Anaphylaxis may occur in people with allergies to foods, insect stings, medications or latex and other products. People who know they’re at risk of anaphylaxis should be armed with auto-injectible epinephrine (often known as an auto-injector)

How can I be prepared to help?

In our professional opinion, the best way to be ready to assist somebody experiencing anaphylaxis is to take our quick and easy course (obviously!). It’s aimed at anyone who needs to be aware of anaphylaxis and covers the use of Epi-Pens®, Emerade® and Jext® (all brands of auto-injectors).

The course helps with recognising signs of the condition and treating it. Care for the patient is detailed, including the important step of calling 999 as soon as it’s recognised.

Alongside an online course, a classroom course is also offered and the certificate is valid for three years. On completion of either, you will be issued a ProTrainings wall certificate and wallet card.

Online course: anaphylaxis training

Classroom course: Click here or phone 01206 805359

Hear what one of our happy customers had to say about our course:

Carlos, from New York:

“THE INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN A METHODICAL, PROFESSIONAL AND NON-THREATENING FASHION… ADDITIONALLY YOU ARE NOT ABANDONED AFTER THE COURSE. THE FOLLOW-UP RESOURCES & SUPPORT GIVES THE STUDENT A SENSE OF SECURITY….WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT.”

Alongside these, there’s nothing like hands-on practice. You can purchase a trailer auto-injector which looks and feels just like the real thing but doesn’t contain a needle or drug. Using this, you can perfect your technique and keep it at the front of your mind, just in case. Buy one here: Auto-Injector Trainer

anaphylaxis A life-saving device which helps to counter anaphylaxis is running out of stock in the UK.  Owners are being told not to throw out their out-of-date devices because they may not be able to get their hands on new ones…?

Allergy-sufferers are now being told that they can use their EpiPens® even after they’ve expired, for up to 4 months! The injection has a 12-month use-by date, but this change could see the life of devices being extended to 16 months until stocks arrive at UK shores.

The government is apparently working to solve the supply issue with the manufacturer of the auto-injector, which is the most widely used device of its kind.

Most EpiPen® owners carry two of them around at all times, ready to counter the severe reactions they face when coming into contact with a variety of allergens including nuts, fish, seafood and fruits.

The shortage has pushed some doctors to prescribe alternative auto-injectors, and the extra demand has led to dwindling supplies of similar devices produced by other brands.

AEDAfter receiving its own defibrillators (AED), Dudley-based shopping centre intu Merry Hill has announced it is embarking on a mission to help save lives in its local area. The team has committed to training over 2,500 residents on how to use defibs by the end of this year!

In partnership with a local charity, staff members have received training to become defibrillator instructors, and are now going out into the area to teach this life-saving skill to others.

As part of its community training program, over 300 pupils at Redhill School were taught how to use the one, and the company even donated an AED to the site!

The shopping centre’s staff regularly have to perform first aid on customers, and it has big plans to go even further with this life-saving support in 2019.

We think this is a great idea and would love to support similar initiatives across the UK. If you would like to inquire about purchasing defibrillators or training, either online or as a classroom-based instructor-led course, please contact us!

We’re all about helping you find the answers to your first aid and safety questions, fast. So we’ve developed a frequently asked questions section on our website where you can find lots of interesting info. It’s sort of like Wikipedia, which interestingly is named combining the words ‘wiki’ and ‘encyclopaedia’.

The word ‘wiki’ which you probably aren’t familiar with, originates from Hawaii, where the term ‘wiki wiki’ means ‘very quick’. Its definition: A website or database, developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.

Well, that’s what we’ve developed. Not just for first aid, but for pet first aid and health and safety too!

Check out the pages here:

As you now know, a wiki is not a wiki without some two-way communication; we need your feedback to improve this pool of knowledge. If you have new questions, better answers, or if you just want to discuss something you’ve read, please do get in touch by emailing us at support@protrainings.uk or calling 01206 805359.

ISO45001We’ve achieved our ISO45001 accreditation; the new international standard for occupational health and safety management. This reduces workplace risks to improve employee safety – something that you all know we care deeply about. Our business is all about protecting others, whether it’s by teaching somebody how to save a life with CPR or how to stay safe when working at height.

Gaining this ISO certification demonstrates our commitment to best-practice occupational health and safety management, reducing the likelihood of accidents and breaches of legislation. This is something that is echoed when we teach. For example, our First Aid at Work courses are designed to make sure everything is considered and all of the relevant standards are met, not only protecting your employees but protecting your business from a liability standpoint.

If you’re concerned about your social responsibilities and want to ensure you’re doing all you can to protect your team, rest assured you’ve found the best training provider to support your business. For more information on training call us on 01206 805359 or visit www.protrainings.uk

Pet first aidBarney the puppy is training to be an assistance dog. Sadly, last month this Westie pup ate a tramadol tablet that had been dropped by his owner.

Luckily, the owner had taken a ProTrainings ‘Pet First Aid’ course and sprung into action, turning the dog upside down and shaking him, before checking the inside of his mouth for the tablet.

“Remembering the first aid talk Keith gave us 2 years ago, I checked his pulse regularly and kept an eye on his breathing rate.

“I can definitely say that I would have panicked more, and would not have done the preliminary first aid, had I not been taught what to do in an emergency. Thank you to Keith and the others at ProTrainings for their clear teaching.”

Barney is alive and well and is continuing his Dog Aid training to become an assistance dog, caring for his loving owner.

anaphylaxisThe Anaphylaxis Campaign (www.anaphylaxis.org.uk ) have reported that Mylan UK has recently received an approval for a variation to the administration of EpiPen® and EpiPen® Junior adrenaline auto-injector.

There is no change to the device or the drug (adrenaline); the change is in the instructions for use as outlined below:

·         Reduced injection time from 10 to 3 seconds – this is based on research confirming delivery of adrenaline for 3 seconds is sufficient.

·         Removal of the massage step after the injection – this step has been removed to simplify the process of administering EpiPen® or EpiPen® Junior.

The changes are aimed to improve patient compliance.

It is important to remember that, the effectiveness of the EpiPen® and EpiPen® Junior will not be impacted regardless of whether it is held for 3 or 10 seconds.

We expect EpiPen® and EpiPen® Junior with the 3-second label to enter pharmacies in the UK from November 2017 onwards. There may still be some EpiPen® and EpiPen® Junior with the 10 second label available on the market.

For more information on choosing a course about Anaphylaxis please go to www.proanaphylaxis.co.uk or call 01206 805359 or email support@protrainings.uk
